Leon Dawson Marks was an early community leader in the history of Shreveport.He also was one of the leaders of Shreveport's prosperous Jewish population. When the war broke out He was elected Colonel of the 27th La Infantry. The 27th served gallantly through the various Vicksburg campaigns. The 27th is said to have captured the first enemy flag during the siege. Col Marks was mortally wounded June 28, 1863. His body was taken back to Shreveport for services which where attended by the Governor and Gen Kirby-Smith. Today he rests in the Jewish section of Historic Oaklawn Cemetery.

The Marks camp has been very active in historical preservation. The camp has undertaken various projects such as: graves location for Caddo Parish and replacement of broken or lost markers in the Confederate Section of Greenwood Cemetery.
